Summary

William Croghan, who recently has moved from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, sets free 13-year-old Matilda Richardson on the condition that she “bind herself by indenture” to him.

Emancipation of Matilda Richardson

Know to all mend by these presents that I, William Croghan late of Louisville Kentucky have manumitted & set free from slavery my negro girl Matilda Richarsdon born in Kentucky and now aged about thirteen years. On consideration however that the said Matilda do forthwith bind herself by indenture good and sufficient in law and faithfully & honestly to serve me or my assigns until she shall attain the age of twenty-eight years.  In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of May A D eighteen hundred and twenty eight.

Personally came before me and Alderman in & for the City of Pittsburgh the above named William Croghan & acknowledged the foregoing instrument of writing to be his proper act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned, Witness my hand & seal at Pittsburgh May 12, 1828.
