Bethlehem Mines Corp. Police
Department Report
1926
In
1926, the privately operated Bethlehem Mines Corporation Police
Department began to patrol the coal fields of Washington, Indiana and
Westmoreland County that were under the ownership of the Ellsworth
Collieries and the Bethlehem Mines Corporation. In 1926, this proved an especially sensitive task, since the
United Mine Workers of America had recently been driven from the
Ellsworth Co. mines in Marianna, Cokeburg, Ellsworth, and Acme and the
company had brought in non-union miners to work those fields. This report, reprinted in total from a collection that contains
additional reports going up to 1935, gives a startling and realistic
glimpse of the warfare between company and union in the bituminous
coal fields of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
