McKeesport and its
Tube Works: A Steel Mill and its
Community, the workforce and the union in Prosperity and Decline, (late
19th century - 1985). Unique documents, indexes and scanned
statistical reports present a microcosm of a Western Pennsylvania steel
community. Students will be able to grasp the facts and dynamics of
ethnicity, job stereotyping, safety, grievances, strikes,
union-management relations, etc. through a unique collection of original
scanned documents.
The UE in Pennsylvania, 1937-1950: One of
the more progressive unions in regard to race and gender issues, the UE
registered brilliant successes in organizing electrical, radio and
machine workers in both the eastern and western parts of the state. The
extensive UE Archives, including records of the national, district and
local levels, as well as an extensive photo library permits illustration
and documentation of this process.
