Scanning & Image Processing

Scanning
After treatment, the maps are safely packaged and transported to the National Mine Map Repository (NMMR) facility in Pittsburgh, PA.  The maps are scanned on an overhead Cruse scanner equipped with a suction table.

Scanning Specs:
-Cruse Table Scanner CS 285/1100 ST/FA
-58” x 90” vacuum table
-8 or 16 bit grayscale
-12 or 24 bit true color
-220 – 630 DPI
-File size approx 1.1 GB

Maps that require assistance staying flat can be lightly suctioned to the table.

Image Processing
After a map has been scanned, the master image is saved as a TIFF.  The images are captured at a high resolution and the resulting TIFF files are very large, up to 1 GB.  The images below are JPEG derivatives of master TIFFs.  The JPEG images are less sharp in detail, but can be viewed more easily on the web since they are lower in file size.
